Xavier Lands 2013 Commitment

Xavier Lands 2013 Commitment

The hard work of Xavier's staff paid off on Tuesday as they reeled in a 2013 commitment that fits a big need when New Jersey native Kamall Richards pulled the trigger.

After a long and painful offseason, the Xavier fan-base was met with some good news on Tuesday - just three days before the tipoff of their regular-season opener.

Lead recruiter Ashley Howard and the Musketeers' put in tons of work to make up ground in the recruitment of 2013 Kamall Richards, and on Tuesday it all paid off. The three-star wing from South Kent in Connecticut, informed Xavier's coaches that he would be playing his college basketball in Cincinnati.

The Musketeers beat out St. Joe's and Seton Hall for the New Jersey native.

"Kamall has a toughness and a competitive desire to be great," said South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson. "He will bring Xavier an ability to score and rebound from the guard position." Jefferson continued, "Chris Mack has an ability to get the most out of his players and I know this is the right situation for Kamall and his future."

The plan originally was for Richards to visit Seton Hall before making his decision, however that trip was delayed in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The visit was rescheduled for the coming weekend (Nov. 9-11), but he ended the process before that visit could take place.

Richards figures to compete for playing time immediately when he steps on campus. Xavier's roster is somewhat depleted when it comes to perimeter players, and especially when it comes to big wings. Richards fits both at 6-foot-6 with good touch from distance and improving perimeter skill.

He'll also make an impact with his toughness on the court. Richards is known as a fierce competitor, physical defender and strong rebounder.

Richards is technically the only member of Xavier's 2013 recruiting class right now. They will have three other players in Myles Davis (non-qualifier), Jalen Reynolds (non-qualifier) and Matt Stainbrook (transfer) joining the team next year as well. Five-star recruit Chris Thomas was originally part of this class, but decommitted from the Musketeers in September.
