Duquesne University
Posted Sep 19, 2006

Duquesne University President Charles Dougherty joined Pittsburgh Police today as they announced the arrest of a suspect and the identity of another involved in the shootings on campus on September 17, 2006.

“The University is grateful for the arrest and look forward to the quick apprehension of the second suspect. I commend the City of Pittsburgh Police Department, as well as our Campus Police who are collaborating with them in the ongoing investigation, for their efforts in resolving this case. We will continue to work together to maintain Duquesne’s reputation as a safe campus,” said Dougherty.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain focused on the student victims and their families, especially Sam Ashaolu and his family. We also pray that justice will be served for the students injured in this tragedy.”

Shooting at Duquesne University – Arrest

The Pittsburgh Homicide Squad has been investigating the shooting that occurred at Duquesne University on Sunday, September 17, 2006 that injured five Duquesne University students. We are deeply concerned for the welfare of the victims in this case, especially for Biodun Ashaolu, who remains in critical condition at Mercy Hospital.

So as not to compromise the on-going investigation, we are not commenting on the details of the investigation or any other arrests made thus far.

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police has coordinated the investigation with Duquesne University, the Allegheny County District Attorney, other departments, and the public. Through our combined efforts and as well countless hours following up on leads on this case, Pittsburgh Homicide Squad developed information that there were two gunman involved in this case. After conferring with the District Attorney’s Office, arrest warrants were issued for Brandon Baynes and William Holmes.

Brandon Baynes, age 18, of Penn Hills, was arrested early this morning by Pittsburgh Homicide detectives in Penn Hills. Baynes is charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, carrying a firearm without a license, and criminal conspiracy.

As of this time, William Holmes, age 18, also of Penn Hills, has not been arrested. He is the second gunman in this case and is considered to be armed and extremely dangerous. An arrest warrant has been issued for Holmes for charges of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, carrying a firearm without a license, and criminal conspiracy.

We are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Holmes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts or additional information on this case is asked to call the Homicide Squad at 412-323-7161.
