Suspension is based on her alleged involvement in events that led to the shootings of Sept. 17 in which five fellow students were wounded.
“The University community is stunned and deeply disappointed to learn that a student may be involved in this incident that has brought such injury and heartache to our campus,” University President Charles J. Dougherty stated.
Brittany Jones began her studies at Xavier University of Louisiana. Xavier was closed by Hurricane Katrina in September of 2005. At the time, Duquesne opened its doors to all student victims of Hurricane Katrina at the Catholic universities of New Orleans. Four such students were accepted to Duquesne, including Jones. They came without the usual credentials required for transfer since the New Orleans universities were unable to supply documentation. Duquesne University did this so that Brittany Jones and others could continue their educations uninterrupted. The University also provided generous financial assistance in this time of need.
“Duquesne reached out to Brittany Jones in an act of charity in accord with our fundamental mission of serving God by serving students. Her alleged actions show that our concern for her was not reciprocated and that she is not representative of our student body,” said Dougherty.
