Duquesne Men's Basketball

  • Duquesne: Dukes Host Colonials 7:00 PM Sat. in Palumbo

  • George Washington: GW To Face Duquesne Sat. Night in Pittsburgh

  • PG: Improved Dukes take on fading power GW
The Colonials, picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll of the league's coaches and media, have lost three games a row and are a shell of the team that dominated the league in 2005-06. The Dukes, picked to finish 11th, qualify as the surprise team in the league and have made a startling turnaround in Ron Everhart's second season as head coach.

Maureece Rice, a 6-foot-1 senior, averages 11.3 points, down from 15.8 a year ago. Rice and 6-8 junior Rob Diggs (12.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg) are the only returning starters from a 23-9 team that made its third consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.

George Washington is an athletic and talented team that lacks an efficient playmaker to pull everything together. Hobbs continues to search for the right combination and has started 10 players at least once. Without a steadying influence at the point, George Washington has 199 turnovers compared to 145 assists.

  • Trib: Dukes' James ready to returnDukes' James ready to return
"It sure looks like (Shawn James will) play, judging from the way he practiced," Duquesne coach Ron Everhart said. "We'll have to wait and see how he feels (today)."

"It's probably better for us to play (10/40, but) we have to look at it game by game," Everhart said.

But they (GW) are playing without regular point guard Travis King because of a knee injury and have struggled with turnovers, committing 216 compared to having recorded just 155 assists.

  • Washington Post: Local Game Previews
Shawn James .... status, however, is uncertain after mildly spraining a knee ligament Monday.

  • Washington Times: Local Calendar

  • Cincinnati Enquirer: Conference notebook
BLOCK PARTY: Duquesne leading scorer and rebounder Shawn James needs just two blocks to be NCAA Division I's 18th player to earn 400 in a career. The 6-foot-10 forward/center has 66 blocks this season (a school single-season record). He has 398 blocks in 71 career games.

But the junior bruised the underside of his left kneecap and suffered a mild sprain in the same knee during Monday's practice, which forced him to miss Wednesday's win over St. Bonaventure.

Women's Basketball

  • New York Times: Masters of Zen, Not of Winning

Cathy Andruzzi (not her photo in story)

Cathy Andruzzi, women's head basketball coach at Fordham, which has not had a winning season since 1995, has tried yoga, meditation, visualization and self-help books to try to end a slump.

In three decades as a fixture on the women’s college basketball scene, Andruzzi has never endured a season quite like this. But she insists she is using every tactic she can to eliminate negative energy, from yoga to meditation to visualization to the study of self-help books with names like “The Master Key System” and “Your Invisible Power.” She also insists she is not focused on her team’s win-loss record, even as it becomes harder and harder to ignore.

A loss to St. Bonaventure on Wednesday dropped the Rams to 0-19 over all and 0-4 in the Atlantic 10, heading into Sunday’s game against Duquesne
