Already. it's that time of year again. College sports are back! The 2008-09 version of Duquesne athletics opens the fall sports season Friday with non-beach volleyball, European football and, on Saturday, running through the park.

Volleyball

In Pittsburgh, the Duquesne and Robert Morris volleyball teams host their Labor Day invitational tournament. Participating in this two-day event are Marist, Saint Francis (PA), Lehigh and Loyola (MD).

Friday is a "red-letter" day for the Dukes. It's the Red Foxes of Marist at 11:00 a.m. and then the Red Flash of Saint Francis of Loretto, Pa., at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, the spotlight moves to the animal kingdom. The Mountain Hawks of Lehigh and the Greyhounds of Loyola of Baltimore, Md., face the Red and Blue at 11 and 7, respectively.

Soccer

Both Duquesne soccer teams are on the road.

Men's soccer, which won a 4-0 exhibition match against Seton Hill last Friday on Rooney Field. takes on Binghamton at 5:00 p.m. Friday in the first match of the West Virginia University Classic at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, W.V.

Then on Sunday, August 31st, the Dukes get the nationally-ranked host Mountaineers at 2:00 p.m. Lafayette is also competing in this tournament.

Meanwhile the lady footballers are in Florida where they will meet the Jacksionville Dolphins at 7:00 p.m. tonight at the Ashley Sports Complex. JU is 1-1 this season having started intercollegiate action last weekend.

Cross Country

The Duquesne Duals, DU's annual cross-country season inaugural, begins Saturday, August 30, 2008, at the Schenley Oval in Pittsburgh's nationally renowned Schenley Park.

The women head off at 9:00 a.m. with the male long-distance runners following one-half hour later.

Pitt, Carnegie-Mellon, and other nearby teams will be competing. Last year, DU was a combined 13-1 in head-to-head competition.

P.S. - DU's 2008 football season starts next Saturday, Sept. 6th against Bucknell at 6:00 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.
