Junior Matthew Groves knocked in Drew Jeffery's setup at 23:09 of the opening period for a 1-0 Duquesne lead. Sophomore Stefan Lundberg's unassisted goal at 67:56 of the second half put the Dukes up 2-0.
Less than two minutes later, Binghamton's Liam Carson knocked in a deflected corner kick to cut the score to 2-1. That was BU's last chance in an offensive set.
Sophomore Chris Torres recorded a pair of saves for Duquesne while the Bearcats' Jason Stenta stopped five Duquesne shots on goal.
The Dukes outshot BU 14-5, with half of those steamers targeting the back of the net.
Duquesne, an uncharacteristic 5-11-3 last season, didn't pick up victory number one until Sep 15, 2007, also against Binghamton in Richmond's UR Nike Challenge Cup. The Bearcats finished last season with a 14-6 mark, tied for first in the AE regular season, and runnerup to Vermont following the AE championship tournament.
Nationally ranked West Virginia plays Lafayette in the tournament's second game tonight. The Mountaineers host the Dukes Sunday at 2:00 p.m. WVU, which was 14-5-2 in 2007, enters 2008 in 15th place in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCCA) preseason poll.
