The Retrievers controlled the play in the Dukes' first loss of the season. DU had a season-low 0.083 attack percentage vs. UMBC's 0.325.
UMBC won the opening sets 25-15 and 25-13.
Duquesne led 4-3 in game three and extended the edge to 15-8 only to see UMBC get within two, 22-20, late in the game. A pair of Jessica Artman kills clinched DU's 25-22 win.
The Retrievers broke a 4-4 game four tie with eight straight points for a 12-4 edge and held off the Red and Blue the rest of the way for the 25-13 match-winning victory.
Four Dukes (Artman, Liz Homan, Tricia Mullen and Brittany Poling) were each credited with eight kills. Amy Palko had 13 digs with Mullen adding 11. Chelsea Tillotson had 27 assists.
Artman and Homan were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Ashley Oscars led UMBC (5-2) with 13 kills, Alyssa Lang recorded 14 digs, Bridget Sheetz had 10 blocks and Kira Giles setup 49 UMBC winners.
The Dukes face Pitt (3-3) on Tuesday at the Fitzgerald Field House before heading to another volleyball tournament next weekend at the Fiesta Bowl Classic. DU takes on Navy on Friday, September 12, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, DU will face Hampton at 1:00 p.m. followed by a match with host Northern Arizona at 10:00 p.m., all times EDT.
