UPDATE: Northern State announced Friday, Sept. 12, that as a result of emergency surgery after the accident, doctors discovered that Coach Meyer has treatable cancer, "a slow-growing carcinoid cancer in his liver and small bowels." (9/13/08.1:30 p.m.)
Meyer was injured in a five-vehicle accident on late Friday afternoon on the way to a retreat with the Division II Northern State University basketball team.
A South Dakota Highway Patrol report stated that Meyer's car and a semitrailer, heading in the opposite direction, collided. Three other vehicles were involved. Meyer, with a broken leg, was the only person injured.
Meyer has had multiple surgeries at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, all to address the break and related vascular issues.
Northern State was 29-4 in 2007-08. Winona State, the eventual 2008 D-11 champion, ended the Wolves' season via a 68-60 decision
in the NCAA North Central Region title game.
Meyer has a career record of 891-291. Bobby Knight retired last season with a 902–371 mark.
Meyer is 189-79 in nine seasons at NSU. He was 665-179 in 24 years at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., then a member of the NAIA. His career started at Division III Hamline University (37-41) in St. Paul, Minn.
