Sam Ashaolu was one of five players shot on campus on Sept. 17, 2006, after a dance sponsored by the Black Student Union. Ashaolu was hit in the head by two bullets and some of the fragments remain in his brain. He has recovered from these life-threatening injuries but has not been able to further pursue a collegiate sports career. He is attending school this semester.
Ashaolu played at Coastal Christian Academy in Virginia Beach, Va. and was recruited by Duquesne out of Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, N.D. where he had averaged 15.3 points and 6.3 rebounds as a sophomore.
The lawsuit also names the Black Student Union, the convicted gunmen and others involved in the assault.
Three other players who were wounded in the shooting (Stuard Baldonado, Shawn James and Kojo Mensah) previously filed similar actions in federal court. The fifth, Aaron Jackson, was the least seriously injured and was able to return to the team when practice restarted after the event. He is the lone senior on this season's team.
