Junior tight end Sean Bunevich had career-highs of eight catches for 163 yards. He scored Duquesne's final touchdown, DU's only second-half score. Cleodis Williams gained 65 yards on 17 carries. Sophomore Connor Dixon was 21-of-46 for 338 yards and two touchdowns; he also was intercepted three times. Senior linebacker Nathan Totino had 23 tackles (13 solo), a forced fumble and recovered an onside kick.
Albany (2-3, 1-0 NEC) was led by David McCarty, who rushed for 230 yards on 37 attempts and caught three passes for 40 yards, one for a TD.
QB Vinny Esposito completed 10-of-18 for just 38 yards but threw for three scores. He also got a TD on the ground. Dave Casale had nine tackles, six solo, and an interception.
Duquesne opened the scoring on Cleo Williams's 20-yard run with just over five minutes gone in the game. Tailback Colin Simmons's two-yarder answered for the Great Danes at 2:35 of the 1st period. Esposito scored from two-yards to put Albany on top, 14-7, at 11:39 of the second quarter.
Dixon's 42 yard pass to Conrad Carter tied the score, 14-all, a minute-and-a-half later. Mark Troyan's 20-yard field goal gave DU it's last lead with 4:09 to go before the break.
Esposito hit McCarty for a 24-yard TD with 0:58 left on the clock. The Great Danes missed the extra point attempt, taking a 20-17 lead to the locker room.
Defenses kept both teams off the scoreboard in the third. UAlbany tallied on Tim Bush's five-yard reception at 8:15 of the fourth; again the kick failed. But Herb Glass was to get one more attempt after Esposito hit Justin Peterson from the two. Glass made his last kick.
Duquesne marched 71 yards, scoring on Dixon's pass to Bunevich for a 41-yard score. DU's attempt for two points was unsuccessful, the score 33-23.
Totino's onside kick recovery gave the Dukes one more chance. Dixon's fourth down pass to Conrad Carter was incomplete. Albany ran out the clock for the final 33-23 score.
The Dukes (2-2, 1-1) face Robert Morris (1-4, 0-3) next Saturday, October 11th, at 12 noon in Moon Twonship, Pa.
