This is the second season Duquesne has offered scholarships in the sport of football in the modern era.
"Our staff did an outstanding job of identifying and filling our needs," said Schmitt. "I'm impressed with the athletic ability of these young men combined with their overall academic achievement. Our staff is looking forward to working with them this fall."
The 2009 season will be Duquesne's second as an associate football-playing member of the Northeast Conference.
The Dukes, who return 14 starters from last year's 3-7 team, will open four weeks of spring practice on March 30. The annual spring game will take place on Saturday, April 25 on Rooney Field. The time of the game is to be announced.
KEVIN BARTHELEMY - Recognized as the underclassman lineman of the year in 2007 ... was named University of Pittsburgh 2008 Specialty Camp MVP (long snapping) ... earned three varsity letters for football ... played basketball and track in high school ... plans to major in marketing/marketing management.
SEAN BRADY - Completed 108-of-172 passes (63%) for 2,038 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior for 6-4 Canisius High School ... was one of 10 finalists for the Conolly Cup awarded annually to the most outstanding player in Western New York ... named second team 2008 All-Western New York by the Buffalo News ... broke Canisius' single-season records for passing yardage and touchdown passes in a season ... led Class AA Canisius to the Monsignor Martin Association League AA championship game ... team captain ... also played basketball.
DEVIN DUGGAN - Played for the 2007 Seaboard Conference champions last season at Valley Forge Military Academy (8-2) ...named Seaboard Conference defensive player of the year ... was a first team all-conference strong safety and team MVP ... led team with 80 tackles including five sacks and 15 tackles for loss ... forced and recovered four fumbles and added a pair of interceptions ... was an all-conference defensive back for a Class AAA Bethlehem Catholic team that was ranked No. 2 in Pennsylvania in 2006 ... helped Bethlehem Catholic to a 9-3 record and first playoff appearance in five years ... National Honor Society student.
REGGIE EILAND - Named second team small school all-state ... also earned a spot on the Washington Post Prince George's 3A/2A/1A all-league team and the Prince George's Gazette-Star all-county first team ... key blocker for 8-3 Gwynn Park's' high-powered running attack ... helped the Yellow Jackets to the 2A South Region playoffs ... 19 touchdown runs came through his side of the line ... three-year letterman.
WILL HENSON - Helped AAAA Coatesville to a 7-4 record and 4-2 third place finish in the Ches-Mont League Red Division ... two-year starter and three-year letterman ... also lettered twice in track ... named first team all-league and all-area ... was a team co-captain ... recipient of the Rich Como Award given to the player who exhibits citizenship and leadership on and off the field ... was listed as one of the Top 30 offensive linemen in Southeastern Pennsylvania by the Philadelphia Inquirer ... four-year honor student.
SERGE KONA - Led team in tackles and special team plays his senior season ... named to the All-Gazette second team defense ... named to ESPN RISE honorable mention for the state of Pennsylvania ... also made the 2008 All-Sentinel second team defense.
DERRICK LAKINS - Won the 2008 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title ... averaged 9.1 tackles per game during his senior season ... named to the first team all-conference in the WCAC ... a recipient of the United States Marine Corps Honor, Courage and Commitment Award ... named to the ESPN RISE honorable mention for the state of Maryland ... overall high school record of 36-4 ... three year varsity letterman.
