Aaron Jackson had 10 points, on 5-of-9 shooting, three rebounds, three assists and three turnovers. The Atlantic 10 Conference first teamer hit beyond the arc over the three-game, four-day set, going 0-for-3 tonight and 0-5 overall. He averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, hit half of his shots from the floor (12-24) and finished with a 3.00 assist / turnover ratio.
Two PP teammates had double-doubles: DeMarre Carroll of Missouri with game-highs of 20 points and 16 rebounds and and Alabama's Alonzo Gee with 12 points and 10 rebounds. PP outrebounded CBH, 62-38, and shot 46.2 percent overall.
Cherry, Bekaert & Holland was led by Benn Woodside (spelling on roster) from North Dakota State with 16 points, and 12 rebounds from Washington's Jon Brockman.
Jackson again started and played 25 minutes. The coaches for both teams, PP's Dave Trickler & Eric Acra and CBH's Dennis Koutoufas & Ben Moore, ensured that all 16 players got an fair opportunity - everyone played at least 21 minutes.
CBH took the early lead. PP stayed within four points and finally took it away on a 3-pointer by Robert Vaden of UAB with 5:06 left in the opening stanza. PP led by three at the half, 39-36.
Auburn's Korvotney Barber sliced tthe deficit to one, 39-38, on a jump shot in the first minute of the second half, only to see PP take off with a 26-4 run for their largest lead of the game, 23 points, on a jumper by Cal State Fullerton's Josh Akognon. The score was 65-42 with 12:55 left.
CBH got within 16, but no closer, with 6:20 remaining on a traditional three-point play by Josh Bostic from Division II Findlay College.
The Newport News Daily Press, in the early release of an article in Sunday's paper, quotes Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com:
"He's got more upside than almost any guard at this tournament. He's a guy that if he doesn't make it right now, he's someone you need to watch down the road."
Ryan Blake, assistant director of NBA scouting, is also quoted:
"One scout may say look at all the adversity (9/06 campus shooting that injured A.J. and four other players) he's gone through (and say), 'He's a confident person. He's played and he believes in himself, and he's performing on the court. He'll get a chance. He'll get that opportunity, whether it's summer league or draft pick or whatever. But he can definitely make money."
Here's something some folks may, like this reporter, not know: Aaron rooms with Sam Ashaolu. "Ashalou (is) now a team manager who takes daily medication to control seizures," the newspaper reported.
