Mich. Player of the Year Commits to Duquesne

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported in Tuesday morning's edition that Mike Talley, a 5-foot-9 point guard from Melvindale Academy for Business and Technology in Michigan, verbally committed for the 2010-11 season.

Michael Talley is the two-time reigning Michigan Class C Player of the Year. He averaged 26 points, nine assists and five steals per game as a junior when he won his second State POTW award.

Talley, whose father played at Michigan, put up 25 points per game in 2007-08 and 24 ppg as a freshman. Mr. Talley coaches Mike III, at Melvindale ABT

The ABT elementary school is in Dearborn. The high school sometimes is shown as the Dearborn ABT, e.g., Scout.com database.

Talley also plays with the highly-regarded Family AAU program. The Trib reported that Providence offered a scholarship; Central Michigan also showed interest.

This is Duquesne's second Class of 2010 verbal. T.J. McConnell, a hot shooting 5-foot-11 point guard from Chartiers Valley High School, verbally committed to Duquesne at the start of his sophomore season. McConnell is the nephew of Duquesne's Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach, Suzie McConnell-Serio.

McConnell, who has scored 1,344 career points in two seasons, hits three-pointers at better than a 50.0 percent rate, 53.4% last year. A similar senior season could put T.J. among the WPIAL top scorers which already has two former Dukes, Tom Pipkins ('97) and Kevin Price ('98), in its 2,000 point club.

Note: WPIAL is the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League.
