Martin, who averaged 14.0 points, 15.0 rebounds and 7.0 blocked shots per game this season at Flora MacDonald Academy in Red Springs, N.C., was cited by ESPN Recruiting's Paul Biancardi on April 13 as one of this spring's top unsigned players "flying under the radar."
"Derrick is a great kid with a tremendous upside," said Everhart. "He's a shot blocker and rebounder with the ability to step out and shoot the 3-pointer. I'm thrilled to have him as part of our program. He's a great fit for our style of play."
Martin attended George Washington Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala. before moving on to Flora MacDonald Academy where he played alongside highly recruited 6-8 forward Luke Cothron this past season. Martin was also being actively recruited by UTEP and UAB.
Martin is the fourth member of the 2010-11 recruiting class, joining guards T.J. McConnell (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Mike Talley (Detroit, Mich./Melvindale Academy for Business and Technology), who signed with Duquesne during the fall early-signing period, and guard/forward Jerry Jones (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) who signed an NLI this spring.
